Bit Rebels is completely jam packed with stuff created out of old and used things. That’s not to say we need to be dusted off or anything, just that there is a new use for everything old. There is really no telling what you can create out of old stuff when you put your mind to it. With a bit of ingenuity and some minor skills, you can really create interesting and useful things that will further lengthen the lifetime of the thing you are about to throw away. Have you ever been at an airport waiting for your luggage and thought to yourself “I could really turn that suitcase into…” Me neither really. However, believe me, there are people out there that really do think in these patterns.

Some of those people are the ones behind my new favorite online store, The BoomCase Store. I can’t find the words to explain how ingenious this is. They have taken old and battered (refurbished) suitcases and turned them into awesome portable speaker boxes. The name BoomCase is beyond fitting, and I can imagine them having a heck of a punch. I don’t know if they have a dampened sound, but the look is just awesome.

The styles and colors of course vary, and that’s exactly why this is so awesome. No suitcase, sorry, BoomCase looks the same, and you can be sure you will have the only one that looks like yours. The prices vary from $250 all the way up to $550. I take it that it depends on the size of the case and how much technology is incorporated into it. This is a cool design. The designer, Alejandro Gonzalez Novoa, came up with the idea of these speakers that look like wash basins to convey the message of water conservation. He says don’t waste even a drop. There is a tap on top of each speaker and the sound that comes out is dedicated to the type of water wastage. One side, the sound is like that of gushing water and on the other side it is the ...sound of endless drops falling on a sink or pavement or surface. This is for people to realize how each can be a bad thing if it remains continuous and through this installation he is probably planning to instill that irritation whereby if ever they hear such sounds, they can stop it by shutting it tight. The Greek god Zeus was infamous for toying with humankind in the "coliseum" of life. These trophies were found on the streets of Brooklyn by rob and his then girlfriend. It was a box of them. They told me. I luckily had a rental truck. So we knabbed 'em. The grill and the acrylic legs were found separately.

Barack Obama "walks on water" for fans of Rachel Maddow

Behind door number 1, a blaxploitation of "The Last Supper". Hailed as the American messiah, president elect Barack Obama was expected to walk on water and rescue the empire just in time for the exuberant fans of The Rachel Maddow show [MSNBC]. The reflection pond, in front of the Washington Monument, would have been my chosen location for the repeated miracle. It's really close to the White House and it's not too deep. Behind door number 2, the word HOPE is threaded with a fake gold chain. With Black Jesus in the background, red beads are hot-glued to this plastic inspirational message. According to the producers of reality TV, bright shiny things are superficial attachments needed to win the GRAND PRIZE. And, in front of door number 3, a statuette symbolizing the negroid Vanna White [Wheel-of-Fortune game show model]. Emotionless and always properly groomed.

Rebuild Warehouse is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization formed in 2008 to receive and sell reclaimed building material donations in order to provide funds to train unemployed and underemployed unskilled workers for “green collar” jobs and to educate the community in affordable ways to live sustainably.

In 2009, Ghetto Picasso was invited to kick-start their "guest artist" series. Once a month, invited artist would create from the available inventory of reclaimed building material. The freakishly odd floor lamp was created with a Metal Filing Cabinet, Outdoor home fixtures and partial Display from a local retailer. Funktional, the lamp was sold to a "green" couple.

IKEA lamp jammed into Brooklyn mail box

In partially working condition, this IKEA lamp was left on the street. Humiliated and homeless, the lamp when found, was then jammed into the bowels of a Brooklyn mailbox [also Humiliated and homeless]. Sharing a similar silver finish, the Brooklyn mailbox was "made-over" in contrasting colors.
